More than 70 of the top names in sports and entertainment are expected for the 2008 18th annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, July 11-13 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Past year’s participants included Michael Jordan, Donald Trump, Mario Lemieux, John Elway, Mark McGuire, Chris Webber, Marshall Faulk, Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, Charles Barkley, Dan Marino, Johnny Bench, George Brett, Troy Aikman, and Rush Limbaugh.

The 54-hole stroke play tournament features a $500,000 purse with the winner pocketing $100,000. The event is sponsored by American Century Investments, a premier investment manager serving two million individual and institutional investors.


Other tournament favorites include John Elway, Ivan Lendl, Chris Chandler, Mark McGuire and past winners Mario Lemieux, Dick Anderson, Al Del Greco, and Mark Rypien. A host of Hall of Famers and Most Valuable Players are expected to challenge the 2006 champion over the picturesque 6,707-yard Edgewood Tahoe course.

Football stars include Jerry Rice, Ronde Barber, Jason Sehorn, Emmitt Smith, Bruce Smith, Marcus Allen, Tim Brown, Mike Shanahan, Mike Ditka, quarterbacks Troy Aikman, Dan Marino, Joe Theismann, Rich Gannon, Drew Brees, Kyle Boller, Ron Jaworski and Jim McMahon.

Actors and entertainers also have their roles in Tahoe. The television and entertainment world has featured Don Cheadle, Ray Romano, Brad Garrett, Cheryl Ladd, Jack Wagner, Bruce McGill, Bryant Gumbel, Maury Povich, Stone Phillip, David Cassidy, John O’Hurley, “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Kevin Nealon, and Richard Karn of “Home Improvement.”


Baseball Hall of Famers who have teed it up in Tahoe includes Mark McGuire, George Brett, Mike Schmidt, Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, Joe Morgan and Rollie Fingers.

Professional basketball has been represented by not only Michael Jordan but other great stars including Charles Barkley, Ray Allen, Jason Kidd, Mike Bibby, Chris Weber, Bill Lambeer, Vinny Del Negro, Dan Majerle and George Gervin.
Hockey stars have been prevalent here with Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, Patrick Roy, Mike Modano, Grant Fuhr, Dan Quinn, and Olympic Gold Medal winner Mike Eruzione.

Other arenas – sports and political, have been represented by Rush Limbaugh, Jesse Ventura, former Vice President Dan Quayle, tennis stars Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Conners and Jim Courier, winter sport champions Bode Miller, Jonny Moseley, Eric Heiden, Dan Jansen, Scott Hamilton, as well as world champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya.
